Israeli Airstrike Kills Lebanese Military Officer

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of multiple Lebanese military personnel, including a high-ranking officer, as reported by the Lebanese army. The incident occurred on a road connecting Nabatieh and Marjayoun in the morning. Specific details regarding the casualties were not immediately disclosed by the army, such as the names or ranks of those killed.

Local television stations indicated that the airstrike claimed the lives of two military members, including a brigadier-general. The Israeli military stated that it targeted a vehicle in southern Lebanon in response to what it perceived as a threat to its forces and stated that the situation is currently under investigation.

The recent ceasefire, brokered by the United States between Israel and the Lebanese government, aimed at easing tensions. The Lebanese government has accused Hezbollah of instigating conflict and attempted to disarm the group prior to the latest hostilities. However, Hezbollah rejected the ceasefire proposal.

The conflict started on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets towards northern Israel following attacks by Israel and the U.S. on Iran. Since then, Israel initiated a ground invasion of Lebanon and conducted extensive operations leading to the displacement of over a million individuals. The Israeli military actions have resulted in casualties among Lebanese soldiers.

Israeli forces have advanced into approximately 20% of Lebanese territory, marking the deepest incursion into southern Lebanon since the end of Israel’s occupation from 1982 to 2000. The ongoing war has led to over 3,500 fatalities in Lebanon, while in Israel, at least 29 soldiers and three civilians have lost their lives in the conflict.
