“Powerful Winter Storm Heads East to Atlantic Canada”

A powerful winter storm that hit Ontario and Quebec with heavy snow is now moving eastward towards Atlantic Canada, accompanied by frigid temperatures.

A significant low-pressure system caused a major snowstorm across southern Ontario, resulting in transportation disruptions and school closures in Toronto and surrounding areas. Toronto Pearson Airport recorded a record-breaking 46 centimeters of snow on Sunday, marking the highest daily snowfall ever. This storm also made January the snowiest month in the region since records began in 1937.

In Quebec, Montreal remained under a snowfall warning on Monday, leading to school closures. The storm was still active in eastern Ontario but was moving towards the Maritimes, according to meteorologist Geoff Coulson from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Atlantic Canada is expecting significant snowfall, with some areas forecasted to receive 20-30 centimeters of snow. While such snowstorms are rare in places like Toronto, they are more common in Atlantic Canada due to storms coming up the Eastern seaboard.

In Nova Scotia, schools and universities are closed, and flights in and out of Halifax have been canceled. The storm is predicted to continue into Tuesday, bringing up to 30 centimeters of snow in some areas, with strong winds reducing visibility along the Atlantic Coast.

Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore anticipates heavy snowfall and uncertainties regarding operating schools and services on Tuesday. Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland are also expected to experience significant snowfall and cold temperatures.

Unlike previous snow events in southern Ontario that were followed by a thaw, this storm is expected to be accompanied by prolonged cold temperatures. The forecast suggests that the snow will linger for an extended period, with colder-than-normal temperatures expected until mid-February.

This winter storm is unique due to the persistent cold temperatures, which will likely prolong the presence of snow. Fans of winter may enjoy this extended snowy period, while others may find it less appealing.
