“Nuxalk Grandfather Inspires Community Service Values”

In today’s digital era, Michael Hood, a Nuxalk grandfather residing in Bella Coola, B.C., emphasizes the importance of instilling in his 10-year-old grandson the values of outdoor activity and community service. Hood, a landscaper for the Nuxalk Nation, is dedicated to enhancing their reserve in Bella Coola, even if he were to win a substantial sum of money.

Acting on his commitment to community welfare, Hood selflessly uses his side-by-side vehicle to clear snow-covered driveways for residents on the reserve, located approximately 430 kilometers north of Vancouver. Despite offers of gas money from grateful recipients, Hood refuses compensation, stating, “I don’t look for pay. I just go do it to help them out because that’s a lot of shoveling.”

Recently, Marina Schooner, an individual associated with the Nuslhiixwta Place of Treasures family development center, was pleasantly surprised to wake up one morning and find her lengthy driveway cleared of snow. Schooner, nearing retirement and dealing with a disability, expressed her gratitude for the kind gesture on social media, noting that the act symbolized respect and touched her heart deeply.

Hood’s altruistic actions were prompted by his role as a guardian for his grandson and his observance of Schooner’s need for assistance. He emphasized the importance of helping others, particularly the elderly and individuals living alone, instilling these values in his grandson as well.

Hood’s dedication to community service extends beyond his role as a landscaper, as he finds fulfillment in giving back to his people year-round. He believes in the reciprocity of good deeds, asserting, “When you do something good, something will come back.” His ultimate goal is to inspire his grandson and others to realize the abundant opportunities for meaningful contributions in Bella Coola.
