“Kitchener Downtown BIA Launches ‘Sunday Grind’ Music Series”

Kitchener Downtown BIA Introduces ‘Sunday Grind’ Music Series in Cafes

For those who enjoy sipping coffee to the sound of music, the Kitchener Downtown BIA has a new winter offering. The Sunday Grind, a weekly event starting this Sunday, aims to highlight downtown cafes with local DJs spinning tunes.

Over the course of 10 weeks, a different cafe will host the event each Sunday. Arnold Yescas, the arts and culture manager at the BIA, conceptualized the initiative to showcase the vibrant cafe culture during the slower seasons of January, February, and March.

The inaugural host cafe is Fresh Ground near the Kitchener Market, a plant-based non-profit cafe in collaboration with the Working Centre. Cassandra Polyzou, the community tools and enterprise hub lead at the Working Centre, hopes that the event will attract more patrons to the cafe, creating inclusive spaces for diverse individuals.

All proceeds from Fresh Ground and other Working Centre establishments support shelter, housing, and outreach programs. The event also provides daytime entertainment opportunities, catering to those who prefer daytime activities over evening outings.

Sunday Grind diverges from the typical bar scene, focusing on creating a vibrant atmosphere in cafes during daylight hours. Owen Fleming, owner of Eardrum Productions and the event’s DJ, will bring a unique lounge house mix to the series, departing from his usual high-energy party playlists.

The Sunday Grind events will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday from January 11 to March 15. For more information, visit the BIA’s website.
