Israel conducted an airstrike in Beirut on Wednesday, marking the first attack since the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah last month. The strike targeted a commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force in the southern suburbs of the city, as reported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz. Although Israeli media stated that the commander was killed, there was no immediate confirmation from either the Israeli military or Hezbollah.
The ceasefire in Lebanon has played a crucial role in a broader truce between the U.S. and Iran, with a cessation of Israeli strikes in Lebanon being a significant demand from Iran. Despite talks progressing between Israel and Lebanon, the ceasefire faces challenges due to ongoing strikes that have paused Israeli attacks on Beirut, with Israeli troops remaining positioned south of the Litani River and carrying out strikes in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, responded to the situation by launching armed drones and firing at Israeli soldiers. Israel had issued evacuation orders for several villages north of the Litani River on the same day, indicating a potential expansion of its operational area.
Discussions between Israel and Lebanon have primarily occurred at the ambassadorial level. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized the importance of stabilizing the ceasefire before considering high-level meetings between the two countries. The recent interactions between Lebanese and Israeli government envoys in Washington have faced objections from Hezbollah.
Since the conflict initiated by Hezbollah’s support for Iran on March 2, Lebanon’s administration has engaged in unprecedented high-level talks with Israel, reflecting internal divisions. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a three-week extension to the ceasefire expressed optimism about a potential peace deal between Israel and Lebanon.
Lebanon’s stance remains focused on achieving peace without seeking normalization with Israel, emphasizing the need for a clear timetable for Israel’s withdrawal and stricter control over weapons to ensure Hezbollah’s disarmament. President Aoun highlighted the importance of establishing a security agreement and halting Israeli attacks before considering a meeting with Netanyahu.
Israel’s establishment of a self-declared security zone in southern Lebanon aims to protect its northern regions from Hezbollah militants embedded within civilian areas. The volatile situation has led to casualties on both sides, with Lebanon reporting casualties from Israeli airstrikes and Israel citing Hezbollah attacks on its soldiers.
The conflict in Lebanon has resulted in a significant loss of lives, with over 2,700 fatalities reported since the beginning of the war. The Israeli military has confirmed multiple attacks by Hezbollah, resulting in casualties among soldiers and civilians on both sides.
