“WNBA Negotiations Intensify Ahead of 2026 Season”

Both the WNBA and the players’ union are optimistic about reaching a new collective bargaining agreement but acknowledge that there are still outstanding issues to address before finalizing a deal. Discussions are ongoing as the 2026 season approaches, slated to begin on May 8 with the addition of the Toronto Tempo, the league’s first Canadian team.

In-person negotiations continued for a seventh consecutive day on Monday, with sessions extending late into the night. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the complexity of the negotiations, highlighting various system and structural elements that need to be addressed to support the players adequately.

The talks have been intensive, with the WNBA and the union meeting face-to-face for over 75 hours since the start of the bargaining sessions. Despite some areas of agreement, union executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson mentioned that significant issues still require resolution.

Regarding the key issues of revenue sharing and housing, differences remain between the league and the union. Negotiations have focused on net revenue versus gross revenue shares, with the union initially proposing 40% of gross revenue and subsequently adjusting to 26%. The league has offered over 70% of net revenue to the players.

The league’s longstanding practice of covering player housing costs is also under discussion for potential amendments in the new CBA. Nneka Ogwumike highlighted the transition towards financial sustainability, aiming to balance player welfare with the league’s economic standing.

Despite the progress made, the looming season start date of May 8 adds urgency to the negotiations. Both sides are committed to finding a resolution promptly to ensure a timely commencement of the season. The players are aware of the schedule implications and are prepared for potential adjustments as negotiations continue.

As the clock ticks towards the season opener, uncertainties remain about the training camp start date if an agreement is not reached soon. The league and the union are dedicated to finding common ground, exemplified by their round-the-clock commitment to reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

With pre-season games scheduled for April 25 and various draft activities on the horizon, the WNBA is navigating through critical decisions to set the stage for the upcoming season. Both parties remain focused on securing a deal that meets the needs of players and the league alike.
