“Windsor Regional Hospital Faces Surge, Urges Alternatives”

Windsor Regional Hospital and Erie Shores HealthCare are currently experiencing a surge in patient volumes, resulting in extended wait times for non-life-threatening cases. The hospitals are advising individuals to explore alternative healthcare options such as Health811, walk-in clinics, urgent care facilities, pharmacy services, or virtual health consultations.

According to hospital officials, the heightened demand is attributed to a rise in respiratory illnesses, seasonal injuries, and additional strains from holiday-related activities. Kristin Kennedy, the current CEO of Erie Shores HealthCare and incoming CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital, highlighted a notable increase in respiratory illnesses like influenza and pneumonia post-holiday gatherings.

The region is currently managing 20 respiratory virus outbreaks, with a significant impact on hospital staff. Both hospitals issued public statements to encourage less severe cases to seek care from community resources as primary care facilities and urgent care centers reopen.

Jonathan Foster, Windsor Regional Hospital’s Vice President of Emergency Services, emphasized the ongoing challenges of high patient volumes, especially during the icy winter months that lead to more trauma incidents. Despite the influx of visitors, emergency departments prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition.

Foster indicated that the surge typically extends from early December to late March, with average wait times of around 3.7 hours in January. Efforts to streamline patient flow and alleviate congestion are underway, such as the implementation of an admission discharge unit at Erie Shores HealthCare.

Healthcare providers stress the importance of seeking immediate emergency care for severe symptoms, such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, signs of stroke, or critical injuries. They urge individuals not to delay seeking medical attention when needed, emphasizing that emergency departments are equipped to handle urgent cases promptly.
