Wheelchair Tennis Star Rob Shaw Retires from Competition

Rob Shaw is set to conclude his wheelchair tennis career following his participation in the Australian Open, as announced by Tennis Canada. Hailing from North Bay, Ontario, the 36-year-old predominantly competed in the quad division, designated for individuals with a permanent physical disability leading to significant functional loss in one or both upper extremities and affecting at least three extremities.

With an impressive record, Shaw boasts 54 ITF titles, comprising 25 in singles and 29 in doubles, making him the Canadian with the highest combined titles, including 10 at the Birmingham Nationals. His career peaked with a No. 6 ranking in singles and a No. 3 ranking in doubles, both achieved in 2023.

In 2022, Shaw broke into the top eight, securing a spot in his first Grand Slam event at the U.S. Open, where he finished as the doubles runner-up alongside American partner David Wagner. Subsequently, he clinched second place in doubles at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2023, partnering with Australia’s Heath Davidson.

On the international stage, Shaw claimed gold in 2019 and silver in 2023 at the Para Pan American Games. Additionally, he represented Canada at the Paralympic Games in 2021 and 2024, reaching the quarterfinals in singles competition.

Shaw is scheduled to kick off his 11th and final Grand Slam on January 27. Following his retirement from active competition, he will transition to a part-time role as a Wheelchair Tennis high performance consultant with Tennis Canada.
