Urgent warning over cheese sold in Tesco and Spar amid fears it contains deadly listeria
Cheeses that are sold in Tesco Republic of Ireland stores and Spar have been recalled over fears they could be contaminated with listeria.
The warning has been issued for 18 cheeses that are produced by JOD Food Products because they “may contain” the bacteria. Symptoms of listeria poisoning include a high temperature, aches and pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.
Listeriosis can sometimes lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as sepsis or meningitis in babies and people with a weakened immune system. If you’ve purchased one of these cheeses, you should return them to the store you bought it from for a full refund. You won’t need a receipt to get your money back. In a recall notice published by JOD Food Products, the company said: “Please return the affected products to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required. There is a risk that the product may contain Listeriamonocytogenes, a bacterium that is potentially harmful if consumed.”
For all product recalls, you can check the Food Standards Agency and Chartered Trading Standards Institute websites. You should also notice recall notices in stores if they’ve pulled a product from shelves. Marks and Spencer also pulled some chicken products over fears they could be contaminated with salmonella. The recall notice only applies to Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland stores, and relates to M&S Southern Fried Chicken Burgers and 2x Chicken Kievs.
