“Uncertainty Looms Over HBO Shows on Crave Amid Potential Merger”

Canadian viewers eagerly awaiting HBO’s upcoming adaptation of “Harry Potter” are set to enjoy the series on Crave in Canada. However, the future of exclusive rights to HBO content on Crave, including popular shows like “The White Lotus” and upcoming seasons of “The Last of Us” and “House of the Dragon,” is uncertain.

Paramount Skydance is in the process of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO and HBO Max, in a significant $110 billion US deal. This acquisition, pending federal approval expected by year-end, raises questions about the fate of existing agreements with Canadian broadcasters like Crave and whether viewers will need to access additional services to watch their favorite programs.

The potential merger could have wider implications for the streaming landscape in Canada. Paramount’s streaming services, Paramount+ and Pluto TV, are already operational in Canada. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has expressed intentions to integrate these platforms with HBO Max into a unified streaming service to enhance competitiveness in the market.

Although the outcome of the deal remains unclear, Bell Media, which operates Crave, has reassured audiences that they will continue to have access to HBO and HBO Max content through a long-term agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery. While the exact duration of the current deal is unknown, statements from Bell Media suggest a commitment to providing HBO programming on Crave for the foreseeable future.

In the event that Paramount+ expands its HBO offerings in Canada, it may not necessarily lead to the removal of content from Crave entirely. Similar arrangements have been observed in the US, where some HBO library titles have been available on multiple platforms simultaneously.

The potential consolidation of Pluto TV, Paramount+, and HBO Max under one service could impact Corus Entertainment, the distributor of Pluto TV in Canada. Meanwhile, Rogers Sports & Media, in a 2024 deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, became the Canadian distributor for various networks, offering on-demand content through its Citytv+ streaming service.

As the streaming landscape evolves with these impending changes, the future of Canadian viewership and distribution of popular programming hangs in the balance.
