The Toronto Tempo, the sole WNBA team in Canada, is gearing up for its debut in May. However, negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement between the league and players have hit a roadblock, with an initial deadline in October passing without a resolution despite an extension.
Team president Teresa Resch recently outlined the Tempo’s plans in an interview, including securing a permanent practice facility, engaging the community and fans for input on a mascot, and finalizing a local broadcast deal — a first in Canada’s history.
The team, which made a grand entrance, appointed general manager Monica Wright Rogers in February 2025 and unveiled head coach Sandy Brondello in November. Brondello, who led the New York Liberty (2022-2025) and the Phoenix Mercury (2014-2021) to championships, is now tasked with building the Tempo roster, which currently consists of over 30 staff members but no players.
Despite the potential work stoppage due to the unresolved CBA, Brondello remains focused on preparing for the upcoming season. She emphasized the importance of being ready to act swiftly once the player acquisition process begins, highlighting the need for strategic planning in the absence of a confirmed roster.
Brondello’s extensive coaching experience and adaptability have equipped her to navigate the complexities of the Tempo’s inaugural season. She emphasized the significance of fostering strong bonds within the team, both on and off the court, to create a cohesive and supportive environment.
With a vision to establish a unique team culture, Brondello aims to leave a lasting legacy for the Tempo. She recognizes the importance of community support and empowerment in women’s sports, aligning with the values and aspirations of the Toronto-based team.
As she settles into her new role, Brondello is eager to explore Toronto’s diverse culture and embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Her coaching philosophy centers on authenticity and resilience, offering aspiring basketball players and coaches a simple yet powerful message: stay true to yourself and embrace your unique qualities.
