Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank has decided to sever ties with one of its major member agencies, Feed Scarborough, due to discrepancies found in the invoices provided by the charity. The board of directors at Daily Bread chose not to renew Feed Scarborough’s membership agreement, leading to the cessation of food deliveries and funding from Daily Bread once the current membership expires at the end of the month.
Neil Hetherington, the CEO of Daily Bread, revealed that concerns arose regarding the financial management of Feed Scarborough, prompting an investigation into financial irregularities. Despite temporarily pausing funding, Daily Bread continued supplying food to ensure the community in south Scarborough was not adversely affected.
Feed Scarborough, as a significant member agency, has historically received substantial food donations and $620,000 in grant funding from Daily Bread. However, a review by CBC News highlighted multiple financial discrepancies, including unaccounted-for invoices, self-approved expenses of over $100,000 to the then-board chair (now CEO) Suman Roy, and the use of grant funds to purchase food from Roy’s personal company.
Although no criminal charges have been filed, Daily Bread reported its findings to Toronto police in November 2025, triggering an investigation by the Financial Crimes Unit. Roy, the founder and CEO of Feed Scarborough, denied the allegations and expressed confidence that an ongoing investigation will vindicate the charity.
Despite Feed Scarborough’s assurance of providing documentation to address the irregularities, access to these records was later denied to Daily Bread. Roy emphasized that Feed Scarborough is committed to cooperating with any police investigation and maintaining its charitable operations, including running independent food banks for the community.
In response to the situation, Clifford Gomes, the chair of Feed Scarborough’s board, affirmed the charity’s commitment to continuing emergency food programs. However, the allegations remain unresolved pending further investigation. Daily Bread’s police report also outlined questionable expenses and payments made by Roy, raising concerns about financial transparency and accountability within Feed Scarborough.
As a result of these developments, Soso World Ministries will take over the distribution of food previously provided by Feed Scarborough, ensuring continued support for those in need in Scarborough. Garth Soso, the founder and director of Soso World Ministries, expressed disappointment over the situation and emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and integrity within the food bank sector.
