“Thunder Bay’s Carter George Shines at World Juniors”

Thunder Bay has a rich hockey tradition, producing numerous NHL players and even two Hockey Hall of Famers. However, the city has seen limited representation in the annual World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Carter George, a standout player from Thunder Bay, made his second appearance at this year’s tournament. His selection last year was the first for a Thunder Bay player since Mackenzie Blackwood in 2016. George is only the tenth player from Thunder Bay to be chosen for Team Canada in the event’s history, dating back to 1974, according to Hockey Canada.

Reflecting on his experience, George expressed pride in representing Thunder Bay on the international stage. He transitioned from playing for local teams like the Thunder Bay Elks and Kings to the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds before being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2024.

At last year’s World Juniors, George showcased his talent with impressive performances, including back-to-back shutouts. This year, Team Canada secured a medal after a three-year drought, with George contributing to their success.

Although the bronze medal was not his top choice, the 2026 tournament in Minneapolis held special significance for George as it was close to his hometown. The support from Thunder Bay fans, including a dedicated chant, left a lasting impact on him.

Despite the outcome, George’s journey serves as inspiration for aspiring hockey players in Thunder Bay, according to Brent Rau, President of the Thunder Bay Kings. The city has seen an increasing number of players drafted into the OHL in recent years, indicating a promising future for hockey development in Thunder Bay.

Looking ahead, George aims to inspire the next generation of Thunder Bay talent, much like how Blackwood inspired him. He hopes to be a role model for young aspiring players, emphasizing the importance of representation and influence in the sport.
