“Temporary Residents in Canada Face Uncertainties”

Abhishek Parmar has established Windsor-Essex as his home over the past six years. However, like many others, he may have to depart Canada this year as one of the 2.1 million temporary residents facing potential departure.

Parmar, aged 25, arrived in Windsor-Essex from India in 2019 to study mechanical engineering technology at St. Clair College. Despite investing over $80,000 in tuition and living costs, he secured a job at an automotive company in LaSalle. His plans for permanent residence (PR) through an Ontario immigration pathway were disrupted by job losses due to tariffs.

Facing the expiration of his work permit in mid-March, Parmar’s aspirations of settling permanently in Windsor, starting a business, and buying a home are currently uncertain. He is diligently pursuing avenues to secure PR, including language proficiency tests and French language learning.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), 1.49 million temporary residents saw their permits expire last year, with another 1.4 million expected to expire this year. Despite available PR spots, a significant number of individuals may be left with expired or expiring visas.

Immigration lawyer Lou Janssen Dangzalan highlighted the challenges faced by those with expiring permits, cautioning that the process could be arduous for both individuals and the government. The pressure to secure PR has intensified, with many considering various strategies to remain in Canada.

Amanjit Kaur Verma, an immigration consultant, echoed the competitive nature of the PR pursuit, noting a surge in applications and a growing need for guidance among temporary residents. She emphasized the importance of adhering to immigration policies and urged for policy adjustments to support those contributing to the economy.

As the deadline for many temporary residents looms, uncertainties persist, underscoring the complexities of the immigration process and the need for proactive measures to address the evolving landscape.
