Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Qatar has pledged substantial investments for key infrastructure projects in Canada. According to Carney, this funding will expedite project completion, boost the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. He made these remarks during a press briefing in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Describing this as a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two nations, Carney highlighted plans to enhance cultural exchanges between Canada and Qatar, including expanding direct flights to promote tourism and business activities. Emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration, Carney stated that when people from different backgrounds are exposed to each other’s cultures, trust and cooperation are strengthened, leading to joint efforts in building a better future.
After prolonged negotiations, Canada aims to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by the summer. Additionally, Canada intends to deploy a defense attaché in Doha to bolster defense partnerships. Earlier in the day, Carney was warmly received at an official ceremony and held discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Carney extended an invitation for the Emir to visit Canada later this year.
Carney’s visit is part of a strategic initiative to enhance trade relations and collaboration in artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense with Qatar. This visit follows meetings in Beijing with key political and business figures to strengthen ties with China and diversify Canada’s trade partnerships beyond traditional allies like the United States.
The Prime Minister will conclude his nine-day international tour by participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
