Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre reaffirmed his party’s commitment to a united Canada amidst a movement in Alberta advocating for the province’s separation. Poilievre emphasized that the Conservatives stand united as federalists, noting that none of his team members in Parliament have expressed support for Alberta separatism.
The group known as Stay Free Alberta is pushing for a referendum to make Alberta an independent country, aiming to gather approximately 178,000 signatures by May. However, provinces cannot secede unilaterally, and if a successful referendum were to occur, negotiations would ensue involving the province, the federal government, and various stakeholders, including First Nations groups.
Poilievre, hailing from Alberta, described himself as a proud federalist and a lifelong Albertan. In a speech delivered at the Conservative convention in January, he attributed separatist sentiments to Liberal policies, accusing Ottawa of undermining Alberta’s energy industry and Quebec’s autonomy.
