“Novak Djokovic Parts Ways with Tennis Players Association”

Novak Djokovic has decided to sever his connection with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an organization he helped establish, which took legal action against the sport’s governing bodies last year. In a social media post on Sunday, Djokovic stated that his values and approach no longer align with the current direction of the association.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner initially revealed the launch of the PTPA alongside retired Canadian player Vasek Pospisil during the 2020 U.S. Open. Their objective was to provide representation for players who operate as independent contractors in a predominantly individual sport.

While the PTPA had aspirations to evolve into a comprehensive union capable of negotiating collective bargaining agreements akin to those found in team sports, this ambition has not materialized. Djokovic expressed concerns about transparency, governance, and the representation of his voice and image within the organization.

In March, the PTPA instigated a class-action lawsuit against the men’s and women’s tours, the International Tennis Federation, and the sport’s integrity agency, alleging systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices, and a disregard for player welfare. Subsequently, the four Grand Slam tournaments were also implicated in the lawsuit.

Despite other players, including Pospisil, being listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Djokovic chose not to participate initially, stating his desire for fellow players to take a stand. The lawsuit advocates for players to have increased access to earnings, arguing that governing bodies restrict prize money and players’ off-court income potential.

Djokovic emphasized his intention to concentrate on his tennis career, family, and contributing to the sport in alignment with his principles and integrity. While wishing the best for the players and stakeholders involved in the PTPA, Djokovic indicated the closure of this chapter in his career.
