“Niagara Resident Debunks Myth of Ontario’s Dullness”

Lindsay Davies, a resident of Niagara, refutes the notion that Ontario lacks outdoor adventure opportunities. In an interview with CBC’s Fresh Air, Davies expressed that the claim of Ontario being dull is unfounded, highlighting the presence of 36 remarkable locations in the region. Her book, “Greenbelt Trails: The 36 best – west of Toronto, from Oakville and Hamilton to Niagara and beyond,” showcases numerous hiking spots in southwest Ontario that hold personal significance to her and are easily accessible.

Initially not an avid hiker, Davies turned to exploring the nearby Greenbelt trails as a way to spend time outside her home after moving back in with her parents. Her passion for these trails led her to share her experiences on various platforms, eventually catching the attention of publisher Formac Lorimer. Impressed with her work promoting destinations through her writing, they offered Davies the opportunity to write a book, to which she agreed.

Promoting the benefits of walking, Davies’ book aims to inspire people to be more active, aligning with recent research from McMaster University in Hamilton. The study emphasizes the advantages of regular walking on overall health and well-being. Professor Julie Richardson, a co-author of the study, recommends walking at least 30 minutes five to six times a week for optimal health benefits.

Aside from physical health, Davies underscores the positive impact of nature on mental well-being. She seeks to make hiking more accessible through her book, particularly targeting beginners by including beginner-friendly trails and boardwalk paths. Davies believes that engagement with nature is beneficial for all individuals, regardless of experience level, and recommends safety precautions such as hiking with a companion or informing someone of your solo hiking plans.
