Figure skater Laurence Fournier Beaudry became emotional in a new Netflix documentary while recounting her experience following allegations of sexual assault against her former ice dance partner and boyfriend, Nikolaj Sørensen. The 33-year-old skater from Montreal opened up about the impact of the accusations in “Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing,” a three-part series scheduled for release on February 1.
The documentary chronicles the journeys of three top ice dancing teams preparing for the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games, including Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France. Fournier Beaudry expressed the emotional toll of the situation, describing it as a challenging period that left her feeling like “collateral damage.”
Due to limited options for partners in ice dance, Fournier Beaudry paired up with Cizeron after Sørensen received a six-year ban for alleged sexual misconduct in October 2024. The suspension stemmed from an investigation by the now-defunct Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner into accusations that Sørensen assaulted an American figure skating coach in 2012.
Fournier Beaudry, who had defended Sørensen since the allegations surfaced in January 2024, highlighted the personal and professional difficulties she faced as a result of the situation. Although an arbitrator overturned Sørensen’s suspension in June citing jurisdictional issues, the case remains under appeal as of the documentary’s production.
The Netflix series also delves into Fournier Beaudry’s and Sørensen’s long-standing partnership, which spanned over a decade. The couple represented Denmark before switching to Canada due to citizenship constraints, competing together at various international events, including the 2022 Winter Games.
Moving forward, Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron are set to compete at the upcoming Olympic Games in Milan after securing victory at the European Championships in Sheffield. The duo’s success adds them to the list of formidable contenders alongside other world-class ice dancing pairs featured in the documentary.
