Netflix has confirmed that a sequel to the popular film “KPop Demon Hunters” is now in the works. The upcoming installment will continue Netflix’s partnership with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and is the first project under their new exclusive multi-year deal for animation.
Expressing her pride as a Korean filmmaker, Kang, who hails from Toronto, mentioned the audience’s demand for more from the Korean narrative and characters. The sequel will delve deeper into the world they have created, marking just the beginning of their storytelling journey.
The original musical film, animated by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix, balancing their fame with a hidden life as demon hunters. The film’s breakout song “Golden” by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Accolades poured in for the film, with wins at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes for best animated feature and original song. Additionally, “Golden” secured a Grammy for best song written for visual media, a historic win for K-pop music.
With record-breaking viewership on Netflix and a global trend for its soundtrack, “KPop Demon Hunters” continues to captivate audiences. Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative vision for the sequel to resonate with viewers and maintain the connection established by the original film.
