Netflix Canada has recently announced the upcoming adaptation of one of Carley Fortune’s popular romance novels. The streaming platform has commissioned a 10-episode series based on Fortune’s third book, titled “This Summer Will Be Different.” The story follows Lucy, who, while vacationing on Prince Edward Island, encounters Felix in a night filled with intense chemistry. Complicating matters, Felix happens to be the younger brother of Lucy’s best friend Bridget. As Lucy grapples with her feelings, a crisis involving Bridget before her wedding prompts a journey back to P.E.I., where she must confront her emotions. The TV adaptation will be filmed in both Toronto and on Prince Edward Island to stay true to the book’s settings.
Carley Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, expressed her excitement about bringing the love story to life on screen. She drew inspiration from her own experiences on the island, emphasizing the beauty, warmth of the people, and the bonds of friendship that form the core of “This Summer Will Be Different.” The author is known for her other novels, including “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.” Her forthcoming book, “Our Perfect Storm,” is set to be published on May 5.
Additionally, Fortune’s novel “Meet Me At the Lake” was acquired for a film adaptation in 2023 by Netflix and Archewell Productions, owned by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Notably, her book was the first romance title to compete in Canada Reads, championed in 2024 by Mirian Njoh. “Every Summer After” is currently in production as a television series titled “Every Year After” on Amazon Prime Video.
