Interim leader of the federal NDP, Don Davies, has criticized Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum for what he perceives as undermining democracy by announcing her intention to run as a Liberal candidate for the vacant seat left by former MP Bill Blair. Davies expressed concern that such actions erode trust in politicians and sow cynicism in politics. He emphasized the importance of staying committed to a party and its values. Begum, who represented Scarborough Southwest provincially for the NDP, resigned ahead of the upcoming federal byelection for the same riding she served in at the provincial level. She stated her belief in the need for unity and progress in Canada.
Former MP Bill Blair, who resigned to take up a diplomatic post in the United Kingdom, had held the Scarborough Southwest seat since 2015. Begum’s decision marks the second byelection candidacy announcement by the Liberals this year. The party has also named Dr. Danielle Martin as their candidate for another upcoming byelection. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles confirmed Begum’s resignation and thanked her for her service. Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith has expressed interest in seeking the Liberal nomination for Begum’s former provincial seat.
Begum, originally from Bangladesh, has been actively involved in community work and served in various roles within the Ontario legislature. Her decision to switch parties has elicited mixed reactions within the political landscape.
