Manitoba’s Team Excels at Scotties Tournament of Hearts
Manitoba stands out at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts with an impeccable 4-0 record in Pool B. Beth Peterson led her team to a convincing 9-2 victory over Northern Ontario’s Krista Scharf, showcasing exceptional skill and teamwork.
Coach Jill Officer praised the team’s ability to deliver crucial shots and support each other when needed. Peterson’s strategic move from skip to third last fall proved successful, with an 88% throwing accuracy. Kelsey Calvert, now the skip and fourth thrower, impressed with a remarkable 95% accuracy.
Despite a position switch after a disappointing finish at the Canadian Pre-Trials, the team, including Melissa Gordon-Kurz and Katherine Remillard, maintained the Team Peterson name. The decision was a team effort to optimize performance and comfort on the ice.
Reflecting on their journey to the tournament, Peterson shared that a mid-year adjustment improved their gameplay. The team’s cohesion and adaptability have been key to their success, evident in their dominant performance, outscoring opponents 36-16 in the round-robin matches.
In another thrilling match, Kaitlyn Lawes secured a 9-4 victory over Kerri Einarson, propelling herself to the top of Pool A with a flawless 5-0 record. Lawes’ outstanding shot-making skills and team strategy were instrumental in the win.
As the competition intensifies, Manitoba’s strong presence and strategic gameplay position them as formidable contenders for the Scotties title. The top teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs, with the ultimate goal of representing Canada at the world women’s curling championship in Calgary this March.
