A man from northern Quebec, aged 36, was in court on Tuesday following an incident on Dec. 20 involving an exchange of gunfire with officers from the Nunavik Police Service that resulted in a tragic outcome. Local authorities have confirmed that a six-year-old girl passed away ten days after being discovered injured in a residence in Inukjuak, Que., following the shooting. Andrew Naluktuk is charged with discharging a firearm at two peace officers, assaulting them with a weapon, assaulting another individual, and causing bodily harm to a child unlawfully.
Naluktuk appeared briefly in court via video conference on Tuesday, and his case was adjourned until Jan. 23. The Quebec police watchdog reported that Nunavik officers engaged in gunfire with an individual outside a house in the community around 3:30 a.m. in response to a report of a person posing a threat to others. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes stated that the individual was injured during the police operation, was taken into custody, and a second person inside the residence, who sustained serious injuries, later passed away. No official cause of death has been disclosed.
