A male individual has been formally accused of second-degree murder following the tragic passing of an infant in Melfort, Saskatchewan. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence on December 24 in response to a distress call regarding a baby’s health. The incident was detailed in a news release issued by the Saskatchewan RCMP on Monday. Melfort, situated around 160 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon, was the location of the distress call.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered an infant, aged less than a year, in an unresponsive state and promptly transferred the child to a medical facility. Unfortunately, the infant succumbed to the injuries sustained four days later, on December 28, as confirmed by the police.
Following an assessment that deemed the injuries as dubious, the investigation was taken over by the RCMP homicide investigation unit and the Prince Albert serious crimes unit. Subsequently, a 37-year-old man was apprehended in Melfort on Saturday and formally charged with second-degree murder, as per police reports.
In the released statement, authorities opted not to disclose the identities of the baby or the accused individual, citing potential imposition of a publication ban. The police did, however, mention that there was a prior association between the accused and the infant.
The accused individual was slated to make a court appearance at the Melfort provincial court on Monday.
