The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has exonerated a London police officer following a fatal collision on September 10, 2025, at the intersection of Queens Avenue and William Street near downtown London. The incident resulted in the death of a 67-year-old woman, with her husband and a passenger of the pickup truck sustaining serious injuries.
Director Joseph Martino of the SIU stated that there was no evidence to suggest the officer had committed any criminal offense, specifically dangerous driving, in connection with the crash. The officer had been on patrol when he noticed a man riding in the back of a pickup truck. After following the truck, the officer’s GPS recorded speeds of up to 82 km/h as events unfolded.
The collision occurred as the pickup truck accelerated aggressively, ultimately colliding with a Volkswagen at the intersection. The impact caused significant damage, leading to injuries and tragic consequences for those involved. Despite the severity of the incident, Martino concluded that the officer had acted within the bounds of reasonable care and public safety guidelines.
Martino further highlighted the delay in reporting the collision to the SIU, a matter he intended to address with the police chief and the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency. The investigation shed light on the events that transpired, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluation and accountability in such cases.
