London Drugs to Close Vancouver Downtown Store

London Drugs announced the closure of its Vancouver Downtown Eastside store on February 1, citing a multitude of challenges including vandalism, theft, and safety concerns for employees and customers. The location, housed in the Woodward’s building since 2009, has faced significant financial losses over the years.

London Drugs President Clint Mahlman explained that the decision was due to the increasing costs of maintaining safety and security at the store, making it unsustainable to continue operations. Despite efforts by the Vancouver police to address issues in the area, Mahlman expressed concerns about the lack of significant changes in the neighborhood.

The closure will impact 90 employees, who have been offered positions at other nearby stores. Vancouver Councillor Peter Meiszner expressed disappointment over the news, highlighting the store’s importance in providing affordable products and services to the community.

Jess Ketchum, co-founder of the Save our Street Coalition, emphasized the long-standing safety concerns in the area and the need for comprehensive support for mental health and addiction issues. The closure underscores broader issues in the neighborhood, with implications for residents who rely on the store for essential services.

Maggie Lord, president of the board at the Carnegie Community Centre Association, lamented the closure’s impact on the Downtown Eastside, particularly noting the loss of a critical Canada Post location within the store. She called for increased collaboration between businesses and community groups to address housing needs and support the area’s improvement.

London Drugs, which operates in multiple markets across Western Canada, will continue its online presence despite the closure of the Downtown Eastside store.
