“Lebel Mansion: A Historic Gem Revived by Community Support”

Perched on a hill, overlooking downtown Pincher Creek, the historic Lebel Mansion stands as an emblem of the town’s past. Celebrating its 115th anniversary last year, this former Catholic hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the efforts of art and heritage enthusiasts over four decades ago. Today, the Lebel Mansion bustles with activity, hosting a pottery studio, children’s art programs, a gift shop showcasing over 60 local artists, concerts, an art gallery, meeting spaces, and various businesses.

Maintaining this heritage gem still relies on grants and community support for sustainability. Kassandra Chancey, the Executive Director of the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek, the primary tenant of the mansion, expresses optimism about its future, noting the unwavering backing from the community and the town over the past decade.

Constructed in 1910 by the Lebel family, who originally operated the town’s general store, the mansion later served as a Catholic hospital with subsequent expansions. The building holds a special place in the hearts of locals, many of whom have personal connections to its history. Following a period of abandonment in the 1980s, a dedicated group of artisans spearheaded the efforts to save the mansion, emphasizing transparency and community engagement to garner support.

After securing historic designation and funding, the mansion was rejuvenated into a vibrant arts and community hub, welcoming visitors of all ages. Notably, the mansion’s ghostly folklore adds an intriguing dimension, attracting curious visitors, especially around Halloween.

Community support remains pivotal in sustaining the mansion’s operations. Fundraising initiatives, like selling old bricks and hosting outdoor concerts, have played a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the building. While challenges persist in preserving historic structures due to financial constraints and regulatory hurdles, the enduring value of these heritage sites underscores the importance of community stewardship for their continued existence.
