Kenneth Heiner-Moller Named Canada Soccer Sporting Director

Former Canada women’s head coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller has been appointed as the sporting director for national teams at Canada Soccer, taking on a key leadership position within the organization.

In this new role, Heiner-Moller will oversee the management of Canada Soccer’s national teams and high-performance programs, reporting directly to CEO Kevin Blue. National team coaches Jesse Marsch and Casey Stoney will report to Heiner-Moller, as confirmed by a Canada Soccer spokesperson.

Kevin Blue expressed enthusiasm about Heiner-Moller’s return to Canada Soccer, highlighting his extensive technical expertise and global experience as an executive and coach. He emphasized the importance of Heiner-Moller’s role in enhancing the sporting structure of the organization and preparing for upcoming milestones post-World Cup events.

Heiner-Moller, aged 55, has been serving as the technical director at San Diego FC for the past year and is set to transition to a full-time engagement with Canada Soccer starting this summer. His appointment aligns well with Canada’s upcoming responsibilities as a World Cup co-host.

Having previously held positions with the Danish Football Association, including roles in coach education and performance, Heiner-Moller brings a wealth of experience relevant to his new responsibilities at Canada Soccer.

Heiner-Moller’s tenure as Canada’s head coach saw significant achievements, including leading the team to the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France and the Tokyo Olympics. Notably, under his leadership, Christine Sinclair became the world’s top goal-scorer, surpassing Abby Wambach during the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The decision to return to Canada holds personal significance for Heiner-Moller, as it allows him to reunite with his wife Anja, who coaches the Vancouver Rise. The couple, along with their two daughters, look forward to being together in Vancouver once Heiner-Moller concludes his duties at San Diego.

Anja Heiner-Moller, a former Danish international, has prior coaching experience with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and North Shore Girls Soccer Club, further solidifying the family’s ties to the soccer community in Canada.
