Julie Goodyear and husband Scott Brand’s love story 29 years after meeting
Coronation Street star Julie Goodyear stepped back from acting years ago, and now can be found relaxing at home in Lancashire. The actress lives with her husband, Scott Brand, and the duo share an unforgettable meet cute.
Prior to meeting Scott, 55, ITV star Julie had been married three times, welcoming a son and now being the grandmother to three kids. Julie, 83, stayed unmarried after her 1987 split from Richard Skrob, but things were set to change after a chance meeting with Scott. The duo met 29 years ago, back in 1996, when Scott delivered plaster to Celebrity Big Brother star Julie’s house during renovations.
Scott was immediately taken by the larger-than-life actress, and proposed to her every day for 11 years before winning her over.
Describing how determined he was to win her over, Julie joked: “Emotional blackmail. He said, ‘You do realise, if you don’t marry me, I’ll never be married. Because I’ll never meet anybody who would ever match up to you.’”
However, despite it taking more than a decade for Julie to make her mind up about accepting a ring, Scott’s done a good job as a husband.
“I might renew his contract. He’s been the best of a bad bunch, he really has,” she quipped of husband number four while speaking to Piers Morgan.
The couple’s relationship changed in June 2023, when Scott shared a statement revealing that Julie had been diagnosed with dementia. Scott is now Julie’s carer, and the duo sold their Manchester home for £1.3 million and have been receiving support from charity Alzheimer’s Society.
The former labourer described how Julie was faring during an exclusive discussion with the Mirror, explaining that things got much easier after he learned to accept help.
“Julie has always been extremely glamorous, going nowhere without her make-up. But now the lipsticks and make-up go unworn, and clothes are no longer of interest, especially the leopard print,” he shared.
“I miss the fun-loving wife that Julie had always been – the larger-than-life personality that brightened up everywhere she went, and the smile that lit up every room. All of this is now slowly fading away and it’s extremely painful for me to watch this deterioration.”
Speaking about the impact of the Alzheimer’s Society, Scott added: “For me, the hardest part was accepting and coming to terms with the diagnosis.
“At the beginning I refused to accept any support, thinking I could cope as we have always been quite private people. This, in reality, didn’t last for long. I soon realised I needed to ask for help as I couldn’t do it by myself.”
Despite their lifestyle undergoing major changes, Julie and Scott still seem incredibly happy and loved up, with the actress getting out and about regardless of her condition. Julie celebrated her 83rd birthday with Scott on March 29, and he shared a snap of his wife smiling widely from their home on the outskirts of Lancashire.
On Facebook, he wrote: “Just got home with my lovely wife and we’ve had a fantastic day together. Thank you so much for all your birthday wishes from both of us.”
