Jolene Campbell, who previously tasted victory at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts as an alternate, is now aiming to replicate that success as a skip. Competing in Saskatchewan colors after a ten-year hiatus at the national women’s curling championship, Campbell led her team to an 8-5 win over B.C.’s Taylor Reese-Hansen, evening their round-robin record to 1-1.
“I think if we just keep building off of this game, keep reading the ice better, throwing better, getting more comfortable out there, it’s a curling game and you never know who could win,” said Campbell’s longtime skip-turned-vice, Robyn Silvernagle, after their successful match.
Campbell, a former fifth on the winning 2011 Scotties team led by Amber Holland, showcased her skills as a skip in both the 2016 national playdowns and the 2022 Scotties. Silvernagle, on the other hand, is making her fourth appearance at the event, having secured a bronze in her debut in 2019.
The duo’s seamless collaboration was evident in their victory over Jana Tisdale, securing their spot in Mississauga. Campbell’s strategic prowess, combined with Silvernagle’s trust and support, has proven to be a winning formula on the ice.
In a thrilling ninth-end showdown, Campbell’s triple-takeout limited B.C. to a single point, allowing Saskatchewan to secure the win. Silvernagle praised Campbell’s confidence and game plan execution, highlighting her versatility as a player.
As the competition unfolds, teams like Manitoba, Canada, and Quebec are also making their mark with impressive performances. The intense matchups and strategic plays are setting the stage for an exciting finale on February 1, where the victors will earn the opportunity to represent Canada at the upcoming world women’s curling championship in Calgary this March.
