An airstrike carried out by Israeli forces resulted in the deaths of four individuals in the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday, as confirmed by local health officials. The incident occurred near the Darraj neighborhood in Gaza City, specifically targeting a group of individuals on Jaffa Street. Along with the fatalities, several others were injured in the attack.
The Israeli military stated that the strike was in response to a Palestinian militant cell operating in close proximity to their troops in the northern Gaza Strip, posing an immediate threat. Both Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, and Israel have been pointing fingers at each other for violating the ceasefire agreement reached last October, which brought an end to two years of intense conflict.
Since the ceasefire came into effect, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that around 700 individuals have lost their lives due to Israeli fire, while Israel claims that four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza during the same period.
In recent developments, a Hamas delegation engaged in discussions with Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators in Cairo to address a disarmament proposal put forth to the group the previous month. Hamas has indicated to the mediators that they are unwilling to discuss disarmament unless Israel commits to a complete withdrawal from Gaza, as outlined in a plan from the U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. The issue of Hamas’s disarmament remains a significant hurdle in the efforts to implement Trump’s plan for Gaza and solidify the ceasefire.
Furthermore, Israeli sources report that Hamas’s attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals. In response, Israel’s military campaign over the subsequent two years led to the deaths of over 72,000 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, according to Gaza health authorities. The campaign also resulted in widespread destruction, food shortages, and mass displacement of the population in Gaza.
