Israel conducted airstrikes in Beirut, targeting what it termed as militant “infrastructure” in the Lebanese capital, while the U.S. cautioned about potential Iranian threats towards universities in the region amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The military incursion into southern Lebanon by Israel aimed at confronting the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has resulted in heightened tensions in the area.
Residents in seven neighborhoods of Beirut’s southern suburbs were warned to evacuate as Israel’s military indicated impending strikes. The airstrikes were heard across the city, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Israel’s military stated that it was targeting “terror infrastructure” in Beirut without elaborating further.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated after Hezbollah’s attack on Israel in solidarity with Iran, leading to a series of retaliatory strikes and military actions. More than a million people have fled the region due to the violence, with a significant portion of Lebanon’s population displaced. The situation has prompted concerns about the safety of universities in the area, with Iran issuing warnings and the U.S. embassy in Beirut advising caution and potential threats.
The ongoing hostilities have resulted in a significant number of casualties and displacements, with evacuation orders covering a substantial portion of Lebanese territory. Despite the unrest, some residents, including Lebanese Christians in border towns, have chosen to remain in their homes despite the military operations in the vicinity.
Additionally, three peacekeepers from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured in an explosion near the border, adding to the complexities and challenges faced by peacekeeping forces in the region. The source of the explosion remains under investigation, with Israel’s military yet to comment on the incident.
