The head of the International Paralympic Committee expressed disappointment over the grievances raised by Ukraine’s National Paralympic Committee during the Milan-Cortina Games, suggesting an effort to divert attention from sports to politics. Andrew Parsons, in an interview with The Associated Press on the Winter Paralympic Games’ closing day, lauded the competition’s outcome, discussed the reinstatement of the Russian flag and anthem, the impact of warmer weather, and the complexities of organizing events across various venues.
Parsons labeled it as “disappointing” that the Ukrainian National Paralympic Committee and other nations’ committees strived to steer focus away from sports. While empathizing with Ukraine’s circumstances and acknowledging the challenges, he emphasized the IPC’s commitment to upholding regulations, even when it involves the Ukrainian committee.
He noted the anticipated government attempts to politicize the event but regretted sports bodies’ involvement in such endeavors. Parsons highlighted the importance of maintaining a sports-centric focus and hoped for a learning experience for committees prioritizing politics over sports.
A few nations, including Ukraine, opted out of the opening and planned to boycott the closing ceremony due to the IPC’s decision to grant Russian athletes wildcard entries and permit them to compete under their flag, leading to disputes between Ukraine’s Paralympic committee and event organizers. Parsons underlined that while discontent was expected concerning the Russian flag’s return, most national Paralympic committees concentrated on sports, aligning with the IPC’s mission of inclusivity through Para sport.
The Paralympics saw the Russian flag hoisted for the first time since 2014, with the anthem played for the first time post-Russia’s 2022 Ukraine invasion, signaling a potential return to Olympic participation. The decision to lift the suspension on Russia was made considering the Paralympic movement’s best interests.
As discussions continue on the impact of warmer weather on the Paralympics, Parsons emphasized the need for proactive measures due to the slow response from global leaders. He highlighted ongoing dialogues within the IPC, IOC, and international federations to address this issue, stressing the complexity of the situation and the necessity for comprehensive planning.
Parsons also endorsed the concept of widespread Games, emphasizing its viability despite operational complexities. He underscored the need to learn from the current experience and apply insights to future editions, ensuring successful execution and adherence to the Games’ spirit.
