“Inuvik Urged to Conserve Energy Amid Propane Shortage”

Residents in Inuvik, N.W.T., have been urged to lower their home heating and adopt energy-saving measures due to a constrained propane supply in the area. Inuvik Gas Ltd. issued a notice on Tuesday advising residents to conserve energy due to an unexpected reduction in fuel supply and challenging weather conditions affecting road access.

The exact status of the local supply was not disclosed, but the community is urged to reduce its reliance on propane in the upcoming days. With temperatures plummeting to -44°C on Tuesday evening as per Environment Canada, the situation is critical.

Inuvik Gas is collaborating with local authorities and government bodies in Yukon and N.W.T. to facilitate propane delivery by reopening roads and ensuring safe access for trucks. Mayor Peter Clarkson confirmed that two propane resupply trucks had already reached the community following an escort through the temporarily closed Dempster Highway.

Propane is crucial for heating homes and cooking in Inuvik, and efforts are underway to secure adequate supply. While confirmation of the resupply trucks’ arrival was not immediately available from Inuvik Gas, the company assured that a comprehensive statement is being prepared.

Clarkson highlighted the coordinated efforts of various government levels in Yukon and N.W.T. to address the propane shortage in Inuvik amidst severe weather conditions. The closure of the Dempster Highway from Eagle Plains to Fort McPherson due to blizzard conditions further complicates the situation.

In the meantime, residents are advised to maintain their homes at a manageable temperature, explore alternative heating options like diesel, wood, or electric heating, and implement energy-saving practices like refraining from using ovens excessively, taking shorter showers, and working from home to reduce energy consumption in office buildings.
