Foster Malleck Shines Among Elite Runners

Foster Malleck continues to showcase his prowess among the elite runners globally. The native of Kitchener, Ontario, secured the fifth position in the men’s 2,000m event at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. Malleck’s remarkable time of four minutes and 54.08 seconds surpassed Cam Levins’s Canadian indoor best of 4:55.35 from 2014, although Athletics Canada does not officially recognize it as a record.

Hobbs Kessler from the United States clinched the victory with a time of 4:48.79, setting a new world record by more than a second, while Grant Fisher, originally from Calgary, followed closely with a time of 4:49.48, also breaking the previous world record. Jake Wightman of Great Britain, the winner of the outdoor 1,500 at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, secured the fourth spot with a time of 4:53.69.

Following the race, the 24-year-old Malleck expressed his confidence in competing with the top athletes, stating that the event boosted his belief in his abilities. Malleck aims to reach the level of success achieved by Kessler and Fisher, particularly inspired by Fisher’s bronze medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

During the world cross-country championships, Malleck covered two kilometers in 5:19 in the opening leg of the 4×2 km relay, finishing just six seconds behind Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot, the reigning world 1,500 bronze medalist. In outdoor competitions last year, Malleck’s impressive performance of 3:32.38 in the 1,500 at La Classique de Montréal earned him a spot on Canada’s world championship team, ranking him as the second-fastest Canadian in the distance.

Despite facing challenges, including a fall during the world semifinal heat, Malleck showcased his resilience and determination. He notably achieved outdoor gold in the 1,500 at the NACAC Championships and secured a third-place finish (3:54.42) in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships. Malleck left Boston University with indoor records in the 1,609m mile (3:53.82) and 3,000 (7:50.96) and transitioned to a professional career, signing with Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore Distance.

Looking ahead, Malleck is set to compete at the John Terrier Classic at Boston University, aiming to meet the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland. His personal best indoors in the 1,500 is 3:38.16 from the DMR Challenge hosted by BU in February 2025.

In a separate achievement, American runner Josh Hoey broke the men’s 800-meter short-track world record with a remarkable time of 1:42.50 at the Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, surpassing the previous record that stood for over 28 years. Hoey’s exceptional performance adds to his successful indoor season, which included setting a world 600 short-track best in Boston.
