Ilia Malinin shared a video on social media where he juxtaposed his past triumphs with a somber image of himself and hinted at an upcoming narrative about an “inevitable crash” amidst the pressure of the Olympic Games. The figure skater is set to participate in the traditional exhibition gala on Saturday to close out the Olympic figure skating events.
Despite helping the U.S. secure the team gold at Milano Cortina 2026, Malinin, the favored contender for an individual gold, faltered during his free skate, finishing in eighth place after two falls and overall struggle. He admitted feeling overwhelmed by the Olympic pressure, confessing, “I didn’t really know how to handle it.”
In his social media post, the 21-year-old alluded to the internal battles faced by even the seemingly strongest individuals on the grandest stage. Malinin, who is eyeing a third consecutive world title in Prague next month, had enjoyed a flawless record of 14 victories over more than two years. However, he acknowledged feeling the weight of expectations early on in the Winter Games.
Following his disappointing performance, Malinin graciously congratulated the unexpected gold medalist from Kazakhstan, Mikhail Shaidorov. Despite the challenges, he faced the media with composure, reflecting on the overwhelming nerves and negative thoughts that clouded his mind during the competition.
