A 5-year-old child and his father, who were detained by immigration authorities in Minnesota and subsequently held in Texas, have been released as per a judge’s directive. They have returned to Minnesota, as confirmed by the office of Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro. Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were apprehended in a Minneapolis suburb on January 20 before being transported to a detention facility in Dilley, Texas. Katherine Schneider, a spokesperson for Castro, verified their safe return. She mentioned that the Texas congressman personally collected them from Dilley on Saturday night and accompanied them back to Minnesota on Sunday.
The sight of the young boy, donning a bunny hat and carrying a Spider-Man backpack, surrounded by immigration officers, sparked widespread criticism of the Trump administration’s stringent enforcement in Minneapolis. Castro penned a heartfelt letter to Liam during their journey to Minnesota, expressing how the young boy had touched many lives and emphasizing that America’s strength and prosperity stem from its immigrant population.
Pictures shared on Castro’s social media showcased Liam sporting his blue bunny hat and a Pikachu backpack. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, welcomed the child’s return, emphasizing that he belongs with his family and in school, not in detention. She urged Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to respect their release.
U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, criticized the government’s deportation practices in his ruling, highlighting the trauma inflicted on children in the pursuit of daily deportation quotas. Neighbors and school officials alleged that federal immigration officers used the young child as a lure by instructing him to knock on his house’s door to prompt his mother to answer. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security refuted these claims, stating that the father absconded on foot, leaving the child in a running vehicle in their driveway.
