Cubs Strengthen Pitching Rotation with Cabrera Acquisition

The Chicago Cubs made a significant move by adding Edward Cabrera to their pitching rotation in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Cabrera, a right-handed pitcher, had a successful season last year with an 8-7 record and a 3.53 earned-run average in 26 starts and 137 2/3 innings.

In exchange for Cabrera, the Cubs sent outfielder Owen Caissie along with infield prospects Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to Miami. Caissie, a 23-year-old player from Burlington, Ont., had a notable performance in the minor leagues, hitting .286 with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs with triple-A Iowa last season.

Cabrera, who is eligible for salary arbitration, is under contract until after the 2028 season. The Cubs, who finished second in the National League Central last year with a 92-70 record, are looking to strengthen their pitching rotation with the addition of Cabrera.

The 28-year-old Cabrera, who made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2021, has a career record of 25-29 with a 4.07 ERA in 87 starts and two relief appearances. Despite some injury concerns, including recurring blisters on his right middle finger and a right elbow sprain, Cabrera showed promise in his performances.

Caissie, who was expected to compete for playing time in right field for the Cubs, had a brief stint in the majors last season. Miami, under manager Clayton McCullough, showed improvement in the 2025 season with a 17-game increase in wins from the previous year. Hernandez and De Leon, the prospects sent to Miami in the trade, have shown potential in their respective minor league performances.
