Chris Eubank accuses HIS SON of breaking rules in Conor Benn fight
Chris Eubank Sr believes his son’s upcoming showdown with Conor Benn falls into the category of ‘breaking the rules.’
Eubank Jr will finally settle the score with his long-time rival on April 26 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in a middleweight dust-up. However, Eubank Sr has made a strong affirmation, insisting that his son should be competing at super-middleweight and not middleweight with a 10lbs rehydration clause.
On top of that, he also believes it’s dangerous for Benn to be fighting 14lbs over his natural weight class. Eubank Jr and Benn were originally scheduled to fight back in 2022, but the latter failed a drugs test just days before fight night, forcing the bout to be scrapped.
Eubank Sr, 58, has been against the fight taking place right from the get-go. With just over a week to go until the fight, the British boxing icon once again weighed in on the clash. He joined Michael Watson – a former opponent who suffered a devastating and life-threatening injury in their clash in 1991 which forced the boxer to retire – to walk a mile in aid of the charity i-Neuro
When asked for his thoughts about the upcoming clash, Eubank Sr didn’t hold back in his assessment. “The rules is you don’t do the wrong weights Weights fight the same weights.”
He added: “They’re breaking the rules. And when you break the rules, we have a country of baboons. This is Great Britain. We developed boxing. So, stick to the rules. Otherwise, what happens to the fighters is what you’re seeing here.”
Recently, Eubank Jr let slip that his old man is dead set against his upcoming dust-up with arch-nemesis Benn even taking place. In an interview with Ariel Helwani, he explained: “He said ‘the fight isn’t going to happen’,” Eubank Jr revealed. “It sounds crazy, but at the same time he said the same before the last fight so I can’t even call it crazy now because it did happen the first time, but it’s not going to happen this time, it’s virtually impossible.”
Earlier last month, when speaking on the Piers Morgan Show, Eubank Jr was asked to send a message to his father ahead of his return. “I’m here. I’m getting ready for the biggest fight of my life,” he said. “If you want to be next to me, like his father’s next to him, we can do it together. If not, no hard feelings, I’ll get the job done for you — don’t worry about it. He’s my old man. It doesn’t matter if I don’t talk to him until the day I die. I’m always gonna love him. He taught me everything. As far as I know, he doesn’t want this fight to go ahead.”
