The Chicago Cubs have signed Alex Bregman to a five-year deal valued at $175 million. Bregman, an accomplished third baseman, will be officially presented by the team at a press conference at Wrigley Field on Thursday. As part of the contract, $70 million will be deferred, representing 40% of the total amount.
Bregman’s annual salary will be $35 million, with $15 million deferred for this year and 2029, $10 million each for 2027 and 2028, and $20 million for 2030. The deferred payments will be made in eight installments every July 31 from 2034 to 2041. Additionally, he will have a full no-trade clause and a hotel suite provided during road trips.
Before joining the Cubs, Bregman had previously signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. However, the deal included opt-out clauses after the first two seasons. Bregman, who recently turned 32, received a warm reception from fans when he attended an NHL game in Chicago wearing the home team’s jersey.
During his brief stint with the Red Sox, Bregman showcased his talent by hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. His contract with the Cubs ensures he has the authority to veto any potential trades. Having spent the majority of his career with the Houston Astros, winning World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, Bregman brings a wealth of experience to the Cubs.
The Cubs are considering various options to accommodate Bregman in their lineup, including the possibility of trading players or utilizing Matt Shaw in a utility role. Shaw, who played third base for the team last season, demonstrated solid defensive skills and contributed offensively with a .226 batting average, 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases in 126 games. Moreover, Nico Hoerner, a two-time Gold Glove recipient at second base, adds depth to the team’s infield options.
