Canada’s Brad Jacobs secured a men’s curling playoff spot at the Winter Olympics by defeating Great Britain’s Bruce Mouat 9-5 on Tuesday. The Calgary-based team, consisting of Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant, and Ben Hebert, scored three points in the seventh end and followed up with back-to-back singles. Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller led the standings with a 7-0 record, while Canada followed closely at 6-1.
The top four teams out of the 10 competing will advance to the semifinals scheduled for Thursday night. Canada’s upcoming matches include playing against Joel Retornaz of host Italy on Wednesday afternoon and Norway’s Magnus Ramsfjell on Thursday morning. The gold-medal game is set to take place on Saturday at Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.
In women’s curling, Canada’s Rachel Homan triumphed over Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg with a score of 8-6 during the round-robin play on Tuesday afternoon. Homan, alongside Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes from Ottawa, scored a crucial deuce in the 10th end, handing Sweden (6-1) its first defeat in the competition. Homan’s victory came through a nose hit.
Canada’s record improved to 4-3 with two matches left to play. Homan was slated to face host Italy on Wednesday and South Korea’s Eunji Gim in the final round-robin match on Thursday.
