A recent update has indicated that the do-not-consume directive has been rescinded for the drinking water supply in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. However, residents are urged to continue boiling water before consumption. The territory’s health department announced the persistence of a boil water advisory for the water treatment facility and all natural water sources. This precautionary measure is due to a mechanical malfunction at the plant.
Following the infiltration of seawater into the water treatment plant last month, resulting in the inability to provide clean water, a state of emergency was declared in the community of approximately 1,200 individuals. Although the state of emergency was lifted within a week, concerns remained about the safety of tap water even after boiling or filtering.
The latest advisory confirms the removal of the do-not-consume order while emphasizing the continuation of the boil water advisory. Residents are reminded to boil water for drinking, making beverages, cooking, dental hygiene, and washing produce. The health department assures residents that they will be promptly informed when the advisory is lifted.
