Cynthia Appiah, a renowned bobsledder, has a compelling and impactful story in the world of the Olympics. Recently selected for the Canadian bobsleigh team, Appiah’s journey into the sport began unexpectedly. Raised in Toronto Public Housing, she stumbled upon bobsledding, which eventually led her to excel as a brakewoman at the national level.
Growing up as the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants, Appiah was instilled with values of hard work and perseverance from an early age. This mindset propelled her to give her utmost dedication in everything she pursued, fearing the consequences of falling short of expectations, especially in her mother’s eyes.
Despite her family’s financial constraints preventing her from playing soccer, Appiah found her passion for sports through cost-effective avenues, such as baseball programs. Her athletic journey expanded to include shot put and weight throw, and she later thrived as a student-athlete at York University, studying history and psychology.
Transitioning from track and field to bobsleigh, Appiah’s athletic background and skills seamlessly transferred to the new sport. Despite facing skepticism and safety concerns from her family, she embraced bobsleigh wholeheartedly, even choosing to pursue it over further academic studies.
Appiah’s determination and talent led her to compete in the Winter Games, with a notable achievement being a silver medal in monobob at the World Cup. As a Black woman in a predominantly white sport, she acknowledges the diversity strides made in bobsleigh, inspired by trailblazers like Elana Meyers-Taylor and other Black athletes who have shattered stereotypes in the sport.
Reflecting on the culture of bobsleigh, Appiah emphasizes the sport’s inclusivity and the supportive community it fosters among competitors. She believes in the power of bobsleigh to provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to shine, encouraging young Canadians to explore their potential in unexpected avenues like bobsleigh.
