Beautiful European village with £28 flights from UK and quaint cobbled streets

Step back in time by exploring the endless nooks and crannies in this enchantingly picturesque resort. Often touted as one of the ‘most beautiful’ villages in Europe, La Flotte is located on the isle of Ré, just off the western coast of France.

But, compared to the tourist traps of Paris, St Tropez and Nice, this idyllic region feels like it may as well be a million miles away. With stone cobbled alleys, a bustling port and a ‘medieval-inspired market’ that sells locally sourced foods 365 days a year, it’s hard to fathom why this destination hasn’t become saturated with tourists.

La Flotte is one of the oldest villages on the island, and has just over 3,000 inhabitants. It was a major economic hotspot back in the 16th century due to its port, which would export goods such as wine, salt, and spirits. Now, the island has become the epitome of the laid-back French lifestyle, boasting sandy beaches, oyster shacks, and charming eateries.

“If you’re thirsty for knowledge, don’t hesitate to visit the Musée du Platin, just a few meters from the Cours Félix Faure,” said Île de Ré’s tourist board. “A former fire station and distillery in the 19th century, it is now a veritable mine of information on the history and traditions of the Retaine region, and boasts a unique collection of period objects. Its temporary exhibitions are also an opportunity to learn more about Ré la Blanche! The museum is also the venue for visits to some of the commune’s most prominent historic sites.”

You can admire the coastal views by strolling along the promenade, or take a map from the island’s tourist offices to explore the inland villages and attractions – including Abbaye des Chateliers, the restored ruins of a 12th-century gothic abbey. Horse riding is also popular on the island, providing a unique way to catch all of the stunning scenery and changing landscapes.

You can fly directly to La Rochelle airport from London Stansted, which takes just one hour and 40 minutes. If you’re flexible with dates, you can grab return fares for as little as £28 in April. Once you’ve touched down in France, you’re only a 24-minute drive to La Flotte.

Accommodation in La Flotte varies depending on your budget. A two-night stay (Monday, April 7-9) at a five-star hotel and spa will set you back £313. A less fancy hotel costs £192 for the exact same dates.
