Anthony Joshua gives honest answer to key Tyson Fury question
Two-time world champion Anthony Joshua believes his long-time heavyweight rival Tyson Fury is now currently retired.
Last month, the ‘Gypsy King’ shocked the boxing world after announcing his retirement from the sport following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. In a video uploaded to social media, he said: “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. Get up!”
Following his loss to Usyk, the Brit had been tipped to finally go head-to-head with Joshua, but ‘AJ’ is now scrambling around for his next opponent. The 35-year-old is looking to get back in the win column after suffering a devastating knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois last September.
On the topic of Fury, many people within the sport remain sceptical as to whether he’s actually decided to call it a day. However, Joshua believes the ‘Gypsy King’ is currently retired. In an interview with iFL TV, he said: “Yeah, he has, he’s announced it so yeah he has. Has he retired with a possibility of coming back? Yes. Has he retired? Yes. Is he going to fight next month, no? In short, he might come back but he is retired.”
Regarding his future in the sport of boxing, Joshua added: “More fights, this is my life, this is what I do. Right now I sit outside and I watch and then I’ll make my return one day. Right right I sit back as a fan and watch the great people in the sport I love.” Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is willing to give Fury an ultimatum regarding an all-British showdown with ‘AJ’.
The Matchroom Boxing supremo is itching to get Fury out of retirement in an attempt to make the blockbuster clash. In an interview with IFL TV, he said: “Maybe there’s a conversation in a week or two weeks or three weeks’ time where we say to Fury, ‘just to let you know, you don’t wanna fight AJ, in the summer, or August, September, because if you want to come out of retirement, now is the time to do it’.”
Retirement life is clearly treating Fury well after he was recently seen taking his family to Disneyland Paris. Tyson, his wife Paris, and their seven kids spent the day at the park, enjoying the rides and attractions. Paris shared photos from their trip on social media, showing the family having a great time. Tyson was seen pushing his youngest child in a stroller, smiling as they explored the park together. Paris captioned the wholesome post: “If you can dream it, you can do it. Walt Disney.”
Last week, the ‘Gypsy King’ took to Instagram to show off him enjoying breakfast with Manchester United’s greatest ever manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, in Cheshire. The Brit shared a picture of the pair to his millions of followers on Instagram, captioning the post: “legends of different games! #BREKFAST.”
The meet-up came just hours after Top Rank COO Brad Jacobs insisted that the heavyweight star could be tempted out of retirement by a British heavyweight showdown against Joshua. Speaking to Sky Sports about the potential fight, Jacobs said: “He looks like he’s happy retired and doing it, but he’s done that before. He looks like he’s happy retired and doing it, but he’s done that before. But if not God bless him, he’s earned what he’s got. I believe there is the potential for it. What happens nobody knows. Tyson has done shocking things before, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he did it again.”
