A recent study reveals that some lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes today could have been alive when Samuel de Champlain first explored Lake Huron over 400 years ago. These ancient-looking, armored fish may have a lifespan exceeding 400 years, contrary to previous scientific assumptions of around 150 years.
Despite their remarkable longevity, lake sturgeon, which can reach weights of up to 180 kilograms and lengths of two meters, face endangerment. In Ontario, lake sturgeon are categorized as a species at risk and are endangered specifically in the Great Lakes region due to historical overfishing and habitat destruction, which decimated nearly 99% of their population.
The study, drawing on over four decades of data from lake sturgeon across the Great Lakes, indicates that the species’ recovery may be a more protracted process than initially estimated. Led by Ed Baker, a fisheries scientist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the research suggests that there could be lake sturgeon swimming around that are potentially 400 years old.
Traditionally, determining a sturgeon’s age involved counting growth rings in a fin ray cross-section. However, as sturgeon age, growth slows, making ring counting increasingly challenging. Baker and his team analyzed 44 years of capture data to calculate individual sturgeon growth rates between captures, providing insights into their longevity.
One notable case involved a male sturgeon that grew merely seven centimeters in 34 years, indicating a growth rate of about 0.21 centimeters per year. By extrapolating such growth rates, researchers found that some sturgeon could live for centuries, a surprising but data-supported revelation.
This extended lifespan poses new challenges for conservation efforts, as Trevor Pitcher, a University of Windsor biologist, points out. With sturgeon potentially living for 200 to 400 years, conservation strategies may need reevaluation, especially in light of Canada’s century-long conservation plan for the species.
Pitcher emphasizes the crucial role sturgeon play in ecosystem balance, particularly in controlling invasive species populations. His team is actively involved in training individuals in various regions around the Great Lakes to raise and release lake sturgeon, aiding in population recovery efforts.
For Perry McLeod-Shabogesic of the Nipissing First Nation, lake sturgeon hold immense cultural significance beyond their ecological importance. Described as “grandfather fish” due to their longevity, sturgeon are revered as elders in Anishinaabe tradition, symbolizing wisdom and resilience.
McLeod-Shabogesic highlights the unique spiritual connection the Anishinaabe people have with sturgeon, viewing them as beings that exist “in between” realms, embodying a balance of attributes. Their enduring presence in Indigenous teachings reflects their timeless significance and symbolic power.
The discovery of the potential centuries-long lifespan of lake sturgeon resonates with Indigenous knowledge and ancestral wisdom, validating long-held beliefs about the profound nature of these ancient creatures.
