According to Adam Cook, a DFO scientist and co-lead on a recent report, some lobster management measures have been in place for an extended period. The study seeks to update the scientific basis for these measures, considering the influence of changing water temperatures.
While lobster fisheries in Canadian waters are currently deemed healthy, with most stock status indicators above long-term averages, the researchers aim to provide insights to help stakeholders anticipate and prepare for any future changes.
The DFO clarified that they are not altering any management measures solely based on this study. Instead, the findings could facilitate potential adjustments if requested by the industry or deemed necessary due to stock conditions.
Cook emphasized the need for a tailored approach to lobster fishing areas 27 to 38, spanning from northern Cape Breton to the Bay of Fundy. He highlighted the importance of employing a combination of measures to ensure species conservation.
The study utilized modeling and simulations to analyze the impact of various management strategies. It highlighted that adjusting season lengths could effectively reduce exploitation, injuries, and incidental mortality in lobster populations.
Temperature fluctuations significantly affect lobsters’ behavior, with colder waters leading to decreased activity levels, impacting catch rates and growth. Small reductions in trap limits were deemed insufficient to meaningfully impact lobster exploitation, according to the report.
Long-term measures such as v-notching, a method where egg-bearing female lobsters are marked and released back into the ocean, were also considered. These slow-acting measures aim to protect large, highly reproductive females from harvesting.
