A young child sustained severe injuries following an encounter with a coyote at a playground in Whitby, Ontario, where multiple sightings have occurred recently, according to Durham police. The incident took place on Sunday evening at Vanier Park, where a two-year-old boy was attacked by the coyote. The child was bitten on the face before being rescued by his guardian and onlookers who frightened the animal away. Subsequently, the boy was rushed to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after, authorities responded to reports of another distressed coyote near Harriet and Annes streets. Police located and removed the animal without any reported injuries. Durham police are collaborating with the Town of Whitby, local animal services, and the Durham Region Health Department to investigate the incidents, monitor coyote activity, and mitigate the risk of future encounters.
Despite coyotes being a natural presence in the local environment and human-aggressive incidents being uncommon, authorities are treating these encounters with utmost seriousness. Residents are advised to stay alert and cautious, especially near parks, playgrounds, trails, and natural areas, particularly during the active early morning and evening hours for coyotes.
These recent events follow a previous incident in Whitby where another child was hospitalized due to a coyote bite near a forested tree line in a public field. Durham Region had reported several coyote incidents, prompting a social media advisory urging caution, especially for pedestrians and pet owners in public spaces.
In the last month, Whitby has recorded 96 coyote sightings on the town’s online dashboard. Other nearby communities have also faced similar issues, like York police issuing a public alert after two children were attacked last month. Toronto residents had reported increased coyote presence in the Liberty Village neighborhood, leading the city to develop a new strategy to address the situation.
Police have shared safety tips for dealing with coyotes, including maintaining a safe distance if spotted, supervising children outdoors, and keeping pets on a short leash. It is advised to follow guidance and signage in areas with coyote sightings, avoid those locations where possible, and eliminate food attractants like unsecured garbage. In case of a coyote encounter, individuals are advised to remain calm, make themselves appear larger, create loud noises, and slowly back away.
