“La Loche High School Marks Anniversary with Ceremony”

For the first time in a decade, Dene High School in La Loche opened its doors on the anniversary of a tragic school shooting that deeply impacted the northern Saskatchewan community. The Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) announced that a community ceremony would take place at the high school in the afternoon, a departure from previous years when the school remained closed on the anniversary.

Jason Young, the director of education for the school division, emphasized the importance of honoring and remembering the lives lost in the 2016 shooting. The ceremony aims to commemorate the individuals affected by the tragedy, including teacher Adam Wood, teacher’s assistant Marie Janvier, and brothers Dayne Fontaine and Drayden Fontaine.

In a poignant tribute, Tanzy Janvier, a relative of Marie Janvier, reflected on the impact of the shooting, describing Marie as a passionate youth advocate and animal rescuer. Despite the passage of time, the pain of the loss remains fresh for the family, but Tanzy highlighted the resilience and strength that have emerged from the tragedy.

During the commemorative event, La Loche Mayor Lyle Herman acknowledged the ongoing grief within the community and emphasized the importance of collective healing. He praised the unwavering dedication of community members, including victims, families, teachers, and first responders, in navigating the healing process.

Collaborating with Frank DeAngelis, the former principal of Columbine High School, the school division and high school principal worked diligently to plan this year’s ceremony and seek guidance on moving forward. DeAngelis provided valuable insights on balancing remembrance, understanding the past, and fostering hope for the future.

The day of remembrance included a series of activities, starting with a mass at Our Lady of Visitation Church and culminating in a ceremony at the high school. Looking ahead, the school division intends to hold regular classes on future anniversaries, engaging students in community-focused initiatives.

Over the past decade, La Loche has implemented a comprehensive wellness strategy, emphasizing the motto “Dene Strong” to signify resilience and unity. The school has undergone significant renovations, including the establishment of a wellness room, while the community welcomed the opening of NįtélazÑ‘túë Elementary School last year.

As part of ongoing efforts to honor the memory of those affected by the tragedy, the school division plans to collaborate with the community and stakeholders to develop a monument or commemorative park. The design process will prioritize input from the families of the victims, underscoring the importance of their involvement in shaping the memorial.

Through a combination of resilience, community support, and a commitment to healing, La Loche continues to navigate the aftermath of the tragic event, striving to honor the past while building a stronger future for all residents.
